Planning for Life and Legacy

Estate Planning

A clear plan helps protect the people you love, preserve what you have built, and place trusted decision-makers beside you when they are needed most.

Why It Matters

Estate planning is not limited to people with substantial wealth. California parents, homeowners, business owners, caregivers, and adults who want a say in future financial or medical decisions can all benefit from a coordinated plan.

Without appropriate documents, California law may determine who receives property and a court may need to appoint someone to act for an incapacitated adult. The result can be added expense, delay, and uncertainty at an already difficult time.

A thoughtful plan addresses both lifetime needs and what happens after death. It should reflect your family relationships, the way your assets are owned, and the people you trust to carry out your wishes.

How Estate Planning Works

The right plan is a coordinated set of documents and ownership decisions—not a one-size-fits-all form.

  • Last Will and Testament

A will records who should receive property governed by the document and names a person to manage the estate. Parents can also use a will to nominate guardians for minor children, although a court makes the final appointment based on the child’s best interests.

  • Revocable Living Trust

A living trust can hold property during your lifetime and direct its management if you become unable to act or after death. Properly funded trust assets generally pass under the trust’s terms rather than through a full probate proceeding.

  • Power of Attorney

A durable power of attorney authorizes someone you trust to handle financial and legal matters if you cannot manage them yourself. The document can define the authority granted and help avoid the need for a court-supervised conservatorship.

  • Advance Health Care Directive

An advance health care directive lets you name an agent for medical decisions and record your wishes about treatment. It gives loved ones and medical providers guidance when you cannot communicate for yourself.

  • Asset and Beneficiary Coordination

A plan works only when account titles, deeds, insurance policies, and beneficiary designations support it. We review how key assets are owned and identify steps needed to align them with the plan.
